History

In the 1830s, a Mr. Hollenbeck, who lived near Ottawa, Il, traveled the unsettled territory and found a grove of trees west of the present-day Hinckley. He named the area Squaw Grove after the Native American Women he saw tending camp.

Squaw Grove was probably the first township settled in DeKalb County.

Hinckley history

Hinckley was the brainchild of Francis Edward Hinckley in the 1870s. Hinckley foresaw the need for a village in the eastern area of Squaw Grove Township.

In 1872 the first store was built by Merril and Wager on the northwest corner of Lincoln Ave. and Sycamore St. The town was incorporated in 1877 with a population of 300.
